Youth Organizing Home and Neighborhood Action (YOHANA)

SOMCAN’s Youth Organizing Home and Neighborhood Action (YOHANA) program is a year-round multi-cultural program led by low-income, immigrant youth who care about their communities and want to make sustainable changes.

YOHANA offers a safe, culturally-competent, and democratic space for young people ages 14–18 to gain valuable leadership skills, identify issues in their community, and take action to achieve healthy and equitable neighborhoods.

What We Do

  • YOHANA harness the power of creativity through various mediums such as writing, visual art, and music. The arts-based approaches help to articulate community issues and inspire action.

  • YOHANA training programs are participatory and tailored to meet the needs of our youth. It ensure that every participant feels supported and equipped to lead.

  • Building confidence in public speaking is crucial. YOHANA provide opportunities for youth to engage with policymakers and their communities, enhancing civic engagement skills.

  • YOHANA mentorship program connects youth with experienced mentors who provide guidance, support, and encouragement throughout their journey in community organizing and school.
