Safe Haven Now!
Join YOHANA, SOMCAN, youth, parents, teachers and community organizations in demanding that the SF United School District have a comprehensive School Safety Plan for all school sites in anticipation of potential federal actions, including ICE and National Guard deployment.
On March 24, 2026 at 5PM, YOHANA held a press conference & rally at the SFUSD HQ at 555 Franklin St to drop off 1,000 postcards and demand that Superintendent Maria Su and the SF Board of Education to take immediate action in implementing measures that ensures our schools truly serve as safe havens for every student and family.
WHY THIS MATTER?
The Board of Education has adopted numerous policies and resolutions, including the Commitment to the Education of All Immigrant Children & Opposition to Recent ICE Raids, and the Protection of the Rights of Undocumented Students. However, to date, there has been little to no clear communication to families and staff about how these policies are being implemented in practice.
This concern became especially urgent last October, when fears about potential National Guard and ICE presence arose. The district’s limited response—primarily two single emails without meaningful follow-up—left many families feeling unsupported.
Stronger communication, transparency and an actual implemented plan across all school sites are essential to building trust and ensuring this policy fulfills its purpose.
FACT:
On April 4, 2007, the Board of Education adopted the SF Resolution No. 74-24A2 - SF Board of Education Commitment to Education of All Immigrant Children and Opposition to Recent ICE Raids
On Feb. 2017, the Board of Education Adopted the Protection of the Rights of Undocumented Students Board Policy 5145.10 and it was revised & approved on 4/16/24
AB 495 (The Family Preparedness Plan Act of 2025): State legislation that was passed in October 2025 to protect students' privacy by restricting access to nonpublic areas and prohibiting disclosure of personal information.
SB 98 (SAFE ACT): State legislation that was passed in Sept. 2025 that requires K-12 schools, community colleges, and public universities to notify families about confirmed immigration enforcement activities and enhance safety plans.
On Oct. 22, 2025, SFUSD sent a letter to parents/guardians acknowledging their worry and concern of possible massive ICE and National Guards in SF including encouraging them to update the emergency contact for each student with a link to resources, but minimal safety plan left families feeling unsupported and pulled their kids out of school
On Oct. 23, 2025 a follow-up email was sent to parents and guardians. However, still with minimal safety measures outlined, families and students continued to feel unsafe, reinforcing the perception that the school district lacks a concrete plan to protect them.
On Feb. 13, 2026, SFUSD and UESF reached a tentative agreement from the tireless organizing of UESF members. YOHANA + SOMCAN acknowledges that some of these demands were also carried out in their agreement, however, since the agreed upon demands of UESF and SFUSD is not part of the Board’s Policity, adoption and implementation of it throughout the whole district is limited.
OUR DEMANDS
1) ESTABLISH ALL SFUSD SITES AS SAFE HAVEN
We urge SFUSD to ensure all schools are safe havens where no student or family fears questions about immigration status, and where all related records are kept strictly confidential.
2) PROTECT PRIVACY OF STUDENTS & THEIR FAMILIES
Prohibits SFUSD and its personnel from disclosing, in any form, information about students, their families or households, including education records, and applies equally to school employees and teachers.
3) COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PLANNING
We urge SFUSD to work with community and immigrant rights organizations to develop a comprehensive safety plan in anticipation of potential federal actions, including ICE and National Guard deployment.
4) TRANSPARENT COMMUNICATION
Establish a reliable communication channel among SFUSD, SFPD, and community partners to keep families informed and reduce fear during emergencies.
HOW SFUSD CAN ADDRESS THIS?
Superintendent Maria Su meets with YOHANA, youth, parents and community groups to:
commit time of SFUSD to collaboratively create a School Safety Plan with YOHANA, youth, parents and community groups;
adopt the School Safety Plan in the Board Policy;
have all the school sites implement the School Safety Plan.
Commit. Adopt. Implement.
