Establishing a collective voice and promoting leadership within the SoMa community.
Many neighborhood development projects and city policies and programs that are designed to benefit the South of Market are created without the input and participation of those residents most directly impacted. All SoMa residents have a voice that deserves to be heard and only they have first-hand knowledge of what is necessary for them to be able to attain a healthy and equitable livelihood in the South of Market. However, many barriers prevent low-income and working-class community members from understanding, engaging and actively participating in the different decision and policing making processes of the city.
The goal of SOMCAN's Community Organizing program is to build and support an organized SoMa community that takes collective action and leverages the power needed to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to voice their concerns, actively engage in civic matters and keep San Francisco City Hall accountable to their neighborhood and city. When this is accomplished, SoMa residents can create an equitable, culturally competent and healthy neighborhood for themselves and their families.
The goals of SOMCAN's Community Organizing initiative include:
- Recruiting, educating and building the organizing leadership skills of SoMa residents through SOMCAN's Membership program
- Recruiting, educating and building the organizing leadership skills of youth through SOMCAN's Youth Organizing Program
- Conducting regular workshops and community events for members and non-members to raise their awareness and engage in SOMCAN campaigns
- Increasing the visibility of SOMCAN's Low Income Family Program and Youth Organizing Program to new residents
- Retaining resident involvement through SOMCAN's Membership program
- Providing volunteer opportunities to residents and non-SoMa residents to participate in campaigns and other programs of SOMCAN
- Actively engaging and raising the organizing leadership growth of members in SOMCAN's Membership program
- Offering resources, skills, materials and staff time for residents to create tenant-led groups in their buildings
