SFUSD presents their remodeling plans for the Bessie Carmichael/FEC School to parents, teachers and the SoMa community.

Above and to right: SFUSD presents their remodeling plans for the Bessie Carmichael/FEC School to parents, teachers and the SoMa community.

Sustaining the lives of all SoMa youth and families through a supportive network of quality services.

In addition to resident organizing, SOMCAN connects residents with service providers and other community partners. We recognize that our neighborhood has many agencies and leaders that are committed to addressing the root symptoms of poverty. SOMCAN acts as a unifying agent, bringing together disparate efforts into a unified force whose impact is much greater than the simple sum of its parts.

  • Establishing a safe and balanced convening space where grassroots organizations, community-based organization, nonprofit service organizations, the local elementary school and city agencies can work together to build a network that supports young people from early childhood to adulthood.
  • Raising the visibility of youth and families that live in SoMa
  • Increasing awareness of SOMCAN work among various city agencies
  • Coordinating and administrating the San Francisco Department of Youth, Children & Their Families (DYCF) Parent Action Grant
  • Raising the visibility of youth providers in SoMa
  • Convening monthly meetings of youth serving Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to opportunities to collaborate and provide support
  • Conducting monthly breakfasts with the Principal of Bessie Carmichael/FEC School, parents and youth CBOs to dialogue and share information
